Benjamin A.Gilman International Scholarships for U.S. Students to Study Abroad, 2019
Bureau
of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State is
sponsoring the International Gilman Scholarships for pursuing undergraduate
degree level.
The
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S.
citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic
studies or credit-bearing, career-oriented internships abroad.
The
Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) at the U.S. Department of
State fosters mutual understanding between the people of the United States and
the people of other countries around the world.
Scholarship Details:
Course
Level: This scholarship is available for pursuing undergraduate
degree level.
Study Subject: Scholarship is awarded for pursuing the courses offered by the universities at the undergraduate level.
Scholarship Award: Over 2,900 scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded this academic year for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study or intern abroad. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need. Applicants who are studying a critical need language while abroad can apply for a supplemental award of up to $3,000, for a combined total of $8,000. This award is competitive and offered to a limited number of Gilman scholars each year.

Scholarship can be taken in Abroad
Eligibility:
To
be eligible for a Gilman Scholarship, an applicant must:
- Be a citizen
of the United States.
- Be an
undergraduate student in good standing at an accredited institution of
higher education in the United States (including both two-year and
four-year institutions).
- Be receiving
a Federal Pell Grant or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell
Grant during the term of his/her study abroad program or internship.
- Be in the
process of applying to, or accepted for, a study abroad or internship
program of at least two weeks for community college students and four
weeks for students from four-year institutions, in a single country and
eligible for credit from the student’s home institution. Proof of program
acceptance is required prior to award disbursement.
- Be proposing
to study in a country not currently under a Travel Warning issued by the
United States Department of State* or otherwise determined ineligible for
program participation.
- Applying
for credit-bearing study abroad programs in a country or area with an
overall Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2, according to the U.S. Department of
State’s Travel Advisory System.
Note: Gilman Scholarship
recipients can only receive the scholarship once. If a student previously
declined the Gilman Scholarship, they are welcome to re-apply, as long as they
still meet all eligibility requirements as listed above.
Nationality: The students of USA can apply for this
scholarship.

The Gilman Scholarship Program requires a transcript(s) to
accompany your application. Current/Transfer University Transcript: One copy of
your undergraduate transcript (either official or unofficial)
There are two essays required
as part of the Gilman Scholarship application: the Statement of Purpose Essay
and the Follow-on Service Project Proposal. For those applying for a Critical
Need Language Award, an additional essay is required.
Statement of Purpose
Essay: This is your chance to personalize your application.
Follow-on Service
Project Proposal: This is your chance to explain how you will give back by
inspiring others to pursue their own experiences abroad.
Keep in mind that you are limited to 7,000 characters (including
spaces) per essay. This limit is approximately 1.5 pages, single-spaced in a
word processing program.
